Just for once, she was glad that she was new to the packing room and that the girls working there, though friendly enough, didn’t question why she didn’t speak much or even sing along to the popular songs being played on the wireless.

At teatime in the canteen, Maisie asked her if she was feeling all right.

‘Just a bad period this month,’ she said.

Maisie took in her pale expression and told her to get some beef tea. ‘Aggie recommends it to all the girls.’

Bridget smiled and said that Aggie was usually right. ‘I’ll feel better tomorrow.’

Maisie accepted her excuse and Bridget was glad she wasn’t pressed into explaining what was really worrying her. Neither did she say anything about Aggie’s daughter. For the moment at least, she didn’t want to convey anything about last night, especially the fact that Lyndon had asked her to marry him. Her thoughts were in turmoil. Speaking to someone would help, but not face to face, so how could she get it off her chest?

The answer came to her when one of the girls she worked with sobbed over a letter she’d just received from her beau. He was stationed in a Scottish loch overseeing communications with submarines. Members of the Women’s Royal Navy were also stationed there. He’d fallen into a relationship with one of the Wrens and was now telling her that their romance was all over and that his new love was expecting a baby.

‘I loved ’im. ’Ow could ’e do that?’

Scotland wasn’t so far away. America was a lot further, thought Bridget. The choice to stay or go was hers and hers alone.
